Kathmandu. A fake membership card of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) created using the name and photograph of CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has gone viral on social media, prompting UML leaders to demand legal action against those responsible.
Neeraj Acharya, head of the party's Publicity and Publication Department, condemned the circulation of the fabricated card, describing it as a serious misuse of digital technology and an attempt to mislead the public.
In a Facebook post, Acharya said the creation and dissemination of fake identification cards, manipulated images, and misleading digital content aimed at confusing society and damaging the reputation of political leaders was "offensive" and contrary to political ethics.
He argued that the act may be punishable under Nepal's Electronic Transactions Act and warned individuals involved in producing and spreading false content to immediately cease these activities.
Acharya also called on the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau to identify those responsible for creating and distributing the fake membership card and to take appropriate legal action against them.
The incident has renewed concerns over the misuse of digital tools and image-editing technologies to spread misinformation and misleading political content on social media platforms.
