Woman Records Man After Public Indecency Incident in Lalitpur; Police Hunt for Suspect

Kathmandu. Police have launched a search for a man accused of behaving indecently toward a young woman in Imadol, Lalitpur, after the victim recorded the incident on her smartphone and shared the video on social media.

The incident occurred while the woman was walking alone on a street in Imadol. According to the victim, an unidentified man, believed to be around 40 years old, exposed his private parts and engaged in obscene behaviour.

Instead of fleeing, the woman took out her smartphone and began recording the suspect while following him. The video captures her calling for help from passersby and confronting the man. At one point, she is also seen grabbing and slapping him before he leaves the area.

The footage was uploaded to TikTok at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday and had received more than 2 million views by the time this report was prepared, drawing widespread public attention and sparking discussions about women's safety in public spaces.

In the caption accompanying the video, the woman said she was wearing full-length pants and a T-shirt at the time of the incident, stressing that the incident demonstrates that harassment is not caused by a woman's clothing but by the perpetrator's behaviour.

She said she shared the video not to seek attention but to raise awareness and encourage others to speak out against such incidents.

Following the video's circulation, the victim lodged a complaint with police, prompting an investigation. 

Police at the Imadol Police Station told TechPana that a special team has been deployed to identify the suspect. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and using the viral video to trace the man's movements.

"The suspect's face is clearly visible in the video. We are collecting CCTV footage to determine where he went after the incident. Once he is arrested, further legal action will proceed based on the complaint," a police officer said.

The incident has triggered widespread reactions on social media, where thousands of users praised the woman's courage for documenting the incident and confronting the suspect instead of remaining silent.

Many users described the recording as an example of the effective use of smartphones to document alleged crimes and assist law enforcement.

The video has also prompted many women to share their own experiences of harassment, with several saying they had remained silent about similar incidents during their childhood or teenage years due to fear.

The case has renewed public debate over women's safety in public places and highlighted how mobile technology can play a significant role in documenting incidents and supporting criminal investigations.
