Teen Arrested for Hacking Facebook Accounts to Defraud Victims' Friends and Relatives

 

Kathmandu. Nepal Police's Cyber Bureau has arrested a 19-year-old man accused of hacking Facebook accounts and impersonating the account holders to scam money from their friends and relatives. 

The arrested individual has been identified as Bibek Sunar, a resident of Likhu Rural Municipality–4, Nuwakot, who is currently residing in Balaju, Kathmandu. He was taken into custody on Wednesday.

According to the Cyber Bureau, Sunar allegedly gained unauthorized access to Facebook accounts and impersonated the legitimate account holders to deceive their friends and relatives into transferring money under various pretexts.

Police launched an investigation following complaints from victims. The bureau said technical investigation and digital forensic analysis confirmed Sunar's involvement in the incidents.

The Kathmandu District Court has granted police a five-day remand to continue the investigation.

According to SP Dilip Kumar Giri, spokesperson and information officer of the Cyber Bureau, Sunar is being investigated under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2006.
