Tripureshwor Self-Immolation Case: Ride-Sharing Driver Nepali Dies During Treatment

Kathmandu. A 25-year-old ride-sharing driver who attempted self-immolation after a dispute with municipal police over a wheel lock placed on his motorcycle outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor has died while undergoing treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Ganesh Nepali, a resident of Soru Rural Municipality–1, Mugu, who had been living in Bhaktapur.
According to SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, information officer at the Kathmandu District Police Office, Nepali died at around 11:20 a.m. on Friday while receiving treatment at Bir Hospital. Police have confirmed his death, although the hospital had yet to issue an official statement at the time of reporting.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon after Nepali, a ride-sharing driver in Kathmandu, parked his motorcycle near Gate No. 3 of the Department of Passports.
Police said municipal police placed a wheel lock on the motorcycle after it was parked in a prohibited area. A dispute subsequently broke out between Nepali and the municipal police.
Following the argument, Nepali poured petrol from his motorcycle onto himself and set himself on fire at around 1:45 p.m. in an apparent attempt at self-immolation.
Police personnel at the scene immediately extinguished the flames and rushed him to Bir Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
