Kathmandu: A visual investigation into the death of journalist Suresh Rajak, who lost his life in a fire during a pro-monarch protest in Tinkune on March 28, has been made public. The report, released Friday by Media Kurakani, is the result of a three-and-a-half-month investigation.
The 33-minute video traces how the protest, which began with stone throwing, escalated into a fire. It analyzes Rajak’s location during the event, how and when he entered the Marble House building, and what happened as the fire broke out. It also examines the condition of the building and events leading up to the discovery of Rajak’s body.
The research reconstructs minute-by-minute details: where Rajak was when the fire started, who else was inside, the positions of protesters on surrounding rooftops, and what followed after the fire.
The investigation team used open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools to review over 200 videos, both live and recorded, circulating on social media. They also analyzed metadata, photos taken by journalists, and other visual evidence.
“The exact cause of Rajak’s death is still unclear,” said journalist and researcher Rabi Raj Baral. “But this investigation offers the most complete timeline yet from the start of the clash to the fire and Rajak’s final moments. We hope this helps move further investigations forward as new information emerges.”
To visualize the scene, the team also created a 3D model of Marble House, where the fire occurred. Journalists Arun Karki, Daya Dudraj, and Rabi Raj Baral led the investigation and reporting, while Karki and Suraj Poudel created the 3D reconstruction.
In its conclusion, Media Kurakani stated, “Our investigation shows Suresh could have been saved if the fire had been contained on time. This was not just a tragic accident, but also a failure of coordination by the state.”
