Argentine Football Association Email Hacked After Controversial Win Over Egypt

Kathmandu. The official email account of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) was compromised in a cyberattack shortly after Argentina's controversial 3-2 victory over Egypt, with unauthorized emails sent to journalists falsely claiming the team did not deserve the win.

According to Argentine news outlet La Calle, emails sent from AFA's official institutional account stated that "Argentina did not win" and claimed the result was "the outcome of a corrupt referee's decision." The messages also praised Egypt's performance, despite Argentina's victory.

Citing sources within the association, the report said the cyber intrusion is suspected to have been carried out by a group of hackers of Egyptian origin.

"We detected that emails were sent from one of our institutional accounts without authorization. These messages were not created or approved by our team," the association said.

AFA said technical teams are investigating the incident, working to restore the security of its systems, and determining how the breach occurred. It also urged journalists and the public to ignore any suspicious emails, particularly those containing unfamiliar links or attachments.

The cyberattack came amid controversy surrounding Argentina's dramatic comeback victory over Egypt. Trailing 2-0 after goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko, Argentina rallied with strikes from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernández, with the winning goal coming in stoppage time to secure a 3-2 victory and a place in Sunday's quarterfinal against Switzerland.

Following the match, the Egyptian Football Association accused French referee François Letexier and his officiating team of showing bias for Argentina and called on FIFA to suspend them from the tournament.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan alleged that efforts were made to ensure Argentina and Lionel Messi remained in the competition, claiming his side had been treated unfairly.

The on-field controversy quickly spilled into cyberspace, with international media linking the email breach to the backlash over the match. Social media platforms were also flooded with criticism of FIFA and the match officials in the aftermath of the game.
