Kathmandu: CPN-UML central member Ain Mahar, who was in police custody on charges of defaming and abusing a woman through social media, has been released on bail. Mahar, who appeared at the Cyber Bureau on Wednesday, was ordered released by the Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu, after giving a general statement.
A 29-year-old woman had filed a written complaint with the bureau, accusing Mahar of defaming her through social media. Following the complaint, the Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant against him on 25 August.
According to Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063, anyone who spreads hatred or defamation through electronic media, or teases, harasses, or insults a woman, may face a fine of up to Rs 100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
