Kathmandu: The trend of showing cheap goods online, asking for advance payment, and then hacking accounts through screen sharing has been increasing recently. The District Police Range, Kathmandu, has issued a public notice warning people about such scams.
According to the police, fraudsters lure victims by showing goods at low prices and convincing them to make advance payments. After that, they claim that the payment has not been received and ask the victims to share their screen on WhatsApp or other platforms. During screen sharing, they steal the OTP that appears and hack the victim’s account.
The police have urged the public to remain cautious, saying such crimes are on the rise.
“Do not share your screen or give OTP to anyone. Let’s stay alert and avoid getting cheated,” the notice from Kathmandu Police stated. The police have also requested people to call 100 and report immediately if they experience or witness such fraud.
Complaints about this type of scam have increased across police offices in the country. Victims are reaching out to the Cyber Bureau every day to report such incidents. According to the police, accepting advertisements or messages from unknown accounts and sending advance payments can lead to fraud.
The police have advised people to verify whether a page or account is official before making any payment through social media. They also warned that even verified accounts can be fake and suggested checking posts, reviews, websites, and transaction processes before transferring money.
If you become a victim of such fraud, the police have requested that you file a complaint with evidence at the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Minbhawan, or at the nearest police station.
