Kathmandu. A 13-year-old girl in Bara died by suicide a day after a video showing her being publicly humiliated was circulated on social media, prompting police to launch an investigation and arrest one suspect.
The deceased, identified as Sariya Khatun of Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City-21, was found hanging at her home on June 30, according to police.
A day earlier, on June 29, a video recorded by local youths was shared on social media. The footage shows several youths surrounding the girl after she was seen with a young man known as "Batasa" in a bamboo grove.
In the video, the group can be heard verbally abusing the girl in Bhojpuri using obscene and derogatory words. The footage also appears to show the girl crying and pleading to be allowed to leave while some of the youths threaten to publicly shame her. She is also seen being slapped and pushed before the video ends.
According to Superintendent of Police Narendra Kunwar at District Police Office, Bara, the video was recorded and made public on June 29, and the girl was found dead at her home the following day.
The victim's family alleges that she took her own life after being unable to cope with the humiliation caused by the video's circulation.
Following the incident, the family filed a complaint at Simara Police Station against seven individuals seen in the video, accusing them of abetment of suicide and rape. Based on the complaint, police arrested one young man on July 1 and have begun an investigation.
SP Kunwar said police are treating the case with seriousness.
"Based on the sequence of events, it appears that the girl died by suicide the day after the video was made public. However, as the investigation is ongoing, the exact cause and circumstances can only be determined after a thorough inquiry," he told TechPana.
