Kathmandu Police Expand AI Surveillance, Deploy Smart Cameras, Bodycams and Drones

 

Kathmandu. The District Police Office, Kathmandu, has stepped up the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), body-worn cameras, and surveillance drones, to strengthen security and improve policing across the capital.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, police officials outlined a series of technology-driven initiatives aimed at enhancing law enforcement, real-time monitoring, and administrative efficiency.

According to the office, police personnel deployed in the field are now equipped with body-worn real-time video surveillance cameras, enabling commanders at the central control room to monitor live footage directly from officers' locations and respond more effectively to incidents.

Police also said they have installed AI-powered surveillance cameras capable of automatically detecting faces and identifying suspicious activities. Using the system, authorities have so far identified and apprehended 59 individuals deemed suspicious.

To bolster security at high-risk locations, the office has deployed AI-integrated advanced drones for aerial surveillance. The drones are used for both daytime and nighttime monitoring at more than 50 sensitive locations across Kathmandu, helping police improve situational awareness and the rapid flow of information.

The District Police Office has also introduced technology to streamline administrative processes. Since December–January, it has been operating a video conference-based system that allows courts to conduct virtual hearings for extending custody deadlines.

According to the office, 2,276 custody extension proceedings had been completed through the online system by the mid-July, reducing paperwork and improving the efficiency of judicial procedures.
