Kathmandu: Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) MP Ram Prakash Chaudhary has urged the government to immediately introduce a policy to convert petrol and diesel vehicles into electric ones. Speaking in the House of Representatives on Thursday, he said such a policy would reduce pollution while saving the government significant amounts of money.
Chaudhary pointed out that thousands of vehicles are parked unused in Singha Durbar and other government offices. He argued that if these old vehicles were converted to electric, the country would gain both economically and environmentally.
“The government should introduce a policy for electric vehicle conversion,” he said. “Thousands of old government and private vehicles are sitting idle. If a conversion policy is implemented, those vehicles can run again with electric battery systems.”
He added that such a move would help curb rising air pollution in urban areas, including Kathmandu. The use of electric vehicles, he said, would clean the environment and positively impact public health.
Chaudhary stressed that converting old vehicles to electric would save billions of rupees currently spent abroad on vehicle imports and improve Nepal’s economy. “This will reduce pollution in Kathmandu and other cities, create a cleaner environment, and save the government millions of dollars. I urge the government to implement this policy,” he said.
The issue of converting fuel-powered vehicles into electric ones has been debated in Nepal for years. A few years ago, the government amended the Vehicle and Transport Management Act to allow such conversions. However, due to the absence of clear standards and procedures, the policy has not been effectively implemented
