Kathmandu: The Language Commission has directed the government to use the Nepali language in Devanagari script on embossed number plates. Expressing dissatisfaction over the government’s decision to make English mandatory on all embossed plates from September 17, the Commission has urged the government to ensure Nepali is used as the language of official business, as guaranteed by the constitution.
“Not in a language and script that are not recognized by the constitution, but in accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision of Ashad 2081 (June/July 2024) on the spelling of the Nepali language, Article 7, Clause 3 of the Constitution of Nepal makes it clear that other matters related to language shall be decided by the Government of Nepal on the recommendation of the Language Commission,” the Commission said in a statement, warning the government to comply.
The Commission said it took the decision on 17 August, acknowledging its constitutional responsibility, but made the information public only on Tuesday.
