TechPana Fact Check: Was Gagan Thapa Really Seen Chasing Goats in Kathmandu?

Kathmandu: For the past few days, a video claiming that Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa is chasing goats has been going viral on social media. Various social media users are sharing the video with the claim that “Gagan Thapa has returned to his old job.” When TechPana fact-checked the same video, it was found that the viral video was created by AI.

Claim

A Facebook user named ‘Rudra Jaishi’ has posted an eight-second video claiming that Gagan Thapa has returned to his old job. In the status of the video, he wrote, “Gagan Thapa has returned to his old job.”

In the reels, which were made public at 4:57 pm on November 16, Thapa can be seen chasing goats in the area around Bir Hospital in Kathmandu. There are eight goats walking there, and later he is chasing the goats with a stick. In the background, cars are moving and goats are bleating.

As of the time of writing, the reels have received more than 48,000 views. See the video, archive link and screenshot.

Similarly, on Facebook, many users including ‘Suraj Tamu’, ‘Ra.Ja Ra.Ni’, ‘Suren Ale Magar’, ‘Rasthi Swatantra Ghanti’, and ‘Dipak Guragain’ have posted a video of Gagan Thapa chasing a goat with the same claim.

Research

To investigate the video claiming that Gagan Thapa is chasing a goat, we first extracted keyframes from the video and analyzed it. During the analysis, some scenes in the video were found to be unnatural.

In the video, the tip of the stick carried by a person who looks like Gagan Thapa is seen changing unnaturally. Similarly, the vehicles moving in the background also appear unusual.

The front of the car in the background looks unnatural.

We ran the video through the Hive moderation tool to determine whether it was AI or not. The tool found that the video was 84% AI-generated. The tool also found that the audio used in the video was real.

This analysis confirmed that the video was not real but was generated by AI.
