Most IPTV Set-Top Boxes In Nepal Uncertified, YouTube Access Could Be Blocked Anytime

Kathmandu: The risk of YouTube being fully blocked on most IPTV set-top boxes used in Nepal has increased. The issue is linked to Google preparing to strictly enforce a notice already issued to its OEM partners.
Most set-top boxes currently distributed by IPTV service providers in Nepal run on uncertified Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Google has adopted a policy of blocking YouTube access on such devices to ensure quality, consistency, and user security.
According to Google, uncertified AOSP devices do not meet required technical standards. The company says these devices can degrade user experience and may also pose security risks. As a result, YouTube access is blocked on such platforms.
Google has set strict conditions for manufacturers that want to preinstall its apps and services. Core services such as Gmail, Maps, Play Store, and YouTube fall under Google Mobile Services (GMS).
To receive a GMS license, manufacturers must pass the Compatibility Test Suite and comply with the Compatibility Definition Document. Google has tightened enforcement to prevent manufacturers from bypassing or skipping certification requirements.
Set-top boxes, smart TVs, and gaming consoles fall under the category of living room devices. These devices require the HTML5-based YouTube Living Room application to run YouTube. Certification is mandatory to ensure proper performance and compliance.
Most IPTV set-top boxes and many smart TVs sold by internet service providers and distributors in Nepal are based on uncertified AOSP. Google is implementing this policy in phases.
Although some users are still able to access YouTube on uncertified devices, the service will be automatically disabled once the enforcement is fully implemented globally.
This could force many Nepali households to upgrade to Google-certified Android TV OS devices or certified smart TVs to continue accessing YouTube.
