Kathmandu: The Trump administration has decided to suspend the Electronic Diversity Visa (EDV) program for the time being. The decision follows revelations that the person involved in a recent shooting at Brown University entered the United States through the Diversity Visa (DV) program and later obtained a green card.
A few days ago, two people were killed and nine others were injured in a random shooting at Brown University. After it was confirmed that the suspect had entered the US on a DV and secured permanent residency, the Trump administration decided on Thursday to suspend the DV green card lottery program.
US Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem said that the US Citizenship and Immigration Services has been instructed to immediately suspend the DV program. Until now, around 50,000 immigrants entered the US each year through this program.
Posting on X, Noem said that 48-year-old Portuguese citizen Claudio Neves Valenti was involved in the Brown University shooting. According to her statement, he entered the US through the DV program in 2017 and received a green card shortly afterward.
The United States traditionally opened online applications for the e-Diversity Visa program every year during October and November. Millions of Nepalis applied annually with hopes of migrating to the US.
However, following the decision of the Trump administration, the program has now been halted. US President Donald Trump, who is widely seen as taking a hard line on immigration, did not open the DV application process this year. The online application that was expected to open for the 2027 cycle was not launched. Although preparations were reportedly made to open applications with a one-dollar fee, the DV program was ultimately not opened this year.
