Kathmandu. The government has decided to introduce legal provisions to allow the conversion of old diesel and petrol vehicles into electric vehicles (EVs). A cabinet meeting held on Sunday agreed to open a legal pathway for vehicle conversion, which has been a long-debated issue.
This agenda, which former Minister of Education, Science, and Technology and current MP Mahabir Pun has been raising, is now expected to make it easier to reuse old vehicles after the government addresses it. Before this decision, Pun recalled that he had been making efforts for this for a long time by posting on social media.
He wrote, “The government will definitely push forward the proposal to convert old vehicles into electric ones. I had made a lot of efforts before becoming a minister and also while serving as a minister. But the vested interests did not let it move forward. Now such obstacles will be addressed.”
Previously, due to the absence of law, various students, universities, and organizations faced challenges in obtaining the necessary permissions and registrations to legally operate electric vehicles on the road. Newly elected MP and member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Sagar Dhakal, has praised the ministry-level activity for making this proposal successful.
According to MP Dhakal, he had fully supported the proposal brought by Mahabir Pun, and the Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Sunil Lamsal, understanding the seriousness of the matter, had immediately advanced the proposal.
Dhakal has written on social media, “Congratulations to all of us! Soon, you will be able to convert and use your diesel-petrol vehicles to electric. If the work continues at this pace, we can bring about a major change within a year.”
With this government decision, a legal pathway has been established to convert old and scrap vehicles into environmentally friendly electric vehicles, potentially reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.
