Kathmandu. The government has temporarily suspended the registration of new vehicles in the public transportation sector across the country. The decision came to light after the Department of Transport Management issued a circular to all seven provincial governments and local levels directing them to halt registrations until further notice.
The department has instructed provincial ministries and local authorities not to register new public transport vehicles until additional arrangements are made. Confirming the decision, the Secretariat of Physical Infrastructure Minister said the circular is official and clarified that no new vehicles can currently be registered for public transportation purposes.
The suspension applies to buses, minibuses, microbuses, taxis, tuk-tuks, and electric vehicles (EVs) operating as public transport. However, vehicle registration for private and personal use will continue as usual.
According to the department, the move was taken to address growing problems in the public transport system, including the lack of scientific management, worsening air pollution, increasing traffic congestion, commuting difficulties, and rising fuel costs.
The decision has been implemented under Section 24(3) of the Vehicle and Transportation Management Act, 2049, which authorizes the department to suspend the registration of any type of vehicle in the public interest by considering factors such as environmental pollution, traffic pressure, and road conditions. The restriction will remain in place until a new notice is issued under Section 14 of the same Act.
