Kathmandu. Nepali Communist Party (NCP) lawmaker Pramesh Hamal has called on the government to make arrangements for free broadcast of FIFA World Cup football matches through state-owned Nepal Television.
Speaking during a meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, MP Hamal said the World Cup has become a major source of interest among the public, particularly the youth, but argued that the requirement to pay Rs 999 to access broadcasts has created a “monopoly.”
“I think the monopoly is enough by now. At least the earnings have been made,” MP Hamal said during the session. “Therefore, I request the Nepal government, through the Speaker, to make it available for free on its television channel.”
He further argued that sports broadcasting companies have already recovered their investments and should now consider making the tournament accessible without charge.
“By now they must have earned enough, so maybe it is okay to offer it for free,” he added, urging service providers to consider public access to the event.
