Kathmandu: Nepal Police will no longer release photos or videos of individuals arrested on various charges. On Monday (July 21), the Police Headquarters issued a circular to all district and area police offices instructing them not to make such materials public.
Nepal Police Central Spokesperson and DIG Binod Ghimire said the decision also includes not presenting accused individuals at press briefings. “A person arrested for a crime cannot be considered guilty until proven by a court. Therefore, we have instructed officers not to make them public based solely on their arrest,” he said.
The move follows a July 3 decision by the Office of the Attorney General, which directed authorities not to publicize the identity of accused individuals. DIG Ghimire said the circular aligns with that directive.
However, if there is a need to make the accused public, it can only be done with approval from the Criminal Investigation Department of Police Headquarters.
The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police had already adopted this policy and stopped publishing photos and videos of accused individuals.
