Kathmandu: Undergraduate students have developed a game for people who spend most of their day at a desk and get little to no physical exercise. The game, called Kick and Cross, can be played on mobile and desktop using body movements.
The students showcased the game at the Futurama 2025 exhibition recently organized at Islington College. It was developed by third-year students of Islington College’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) program.
The project team, Satyam Dulal, Vivek Poudel, Aditya Aryal, Apil Ghimire, and Subin Khadka, is led by Satyam and Vivek. Satyam said the game was inspired by the popular mobile game Fruit Ninja.
In Fruit Ninja, fruits like bananas, melons, and apples appear on the screen and are sliced with a finger swipe. Similarly, in Kick and Cross, fruits appear on the laptop screen, but players must slice them using body movements instead of their fingers. The game tracks human body movements, and the sounds and visuals on the desktop make it even more engaging.
The game uses AI-powered ‘computer vision’ technology. The model was trained with images of over 10,000 people in various postures. According to Satyam, it can recognize the skeleton structure of a player’s hands, feet, and body through a webcam.
He said the aim was to provide physical exercise in an entertaining way for people working at a desk all day. “Since we had already studied AI, we had the skills to create a game. We built it in less than a week after coming up with the idea,” Satyam said.
The team plans to develop it into a full-fledged app in the future but will first conduct a market feasibility study. “Right now, we made it only for the Futurama exhibition. If students want, we can add more levels,” he said. The goal is to make the game playable on both laptops and mobiles.
Another team member, Vivek Poudel, said the project is being continuously improved, with plans to develop a mobile and web app featuring 3D body-movement tracking. Satyam added that, as it is a health-related game, it could be refined further with medical consultation. The team envisions Kick and Cross as a tool for people to complete their daily exercise without assistance.
