Federation of Nepali Journalists on strike, demands immediate reopening of online media registration and renewal

Kathmandu: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has announced a strike demanding the immediate resumption of registration and renewal of online media. A meeting of the FNJ’s Digital Media Department on Monday urged the government to act without delay, saying the process has been stalled for about a month.

According to department coordinator Prakash Dhaulakoti, the meeting decided to submit a memorandum to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on 27 August. If the demand is ignored, the federation will stage a sit-in at the Department of Information and Broadcasting with black banners from 29 August.

The government halted registration and renewal of online media from 5 August following amendments to the Printing Press and Publication Act. The FNJ says this move violates citizens’ constitutional rights.

The suspension has also prevented journalists from renewing their press representative certificates and disrupted advertising transactions ahead of the festival season.

At the meeting, FNJ President Nirmala Sharma demanded immediate action to resume registration and renewal. Vice President Umid Prasad Bagchand accused the government of attempting to curb press freedom by introducing restrictive laws one after another.

General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal also said halting online media registration and renewal was unconstitutional and directly obstructed citizens’ rights.
