Social Media Listing Deadline Ends Tonight: Government to Decide Ban on Thursday

Kathmandu. The seven-day deadline given by the government for social media platforms to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology ends at 12 midnight tonight (Wednesday). The ministry is preparing to discuss the issue on Thursday and decide what action to take against platforms that have not complied.

Speaking to TechPana, Ministry Spokesperson Gajendra Kumar Thakur said the deadline remains open until midnight, so the ministry will wait until then. He added that discussions will be held on Thursday to determine measures against unlisted platforms.

“We are still hopeful that social media platforms which have not come forward for listing will do so by Wednesday night,” Thakur said. “On Thursday, we will make decisions after discussions on what to do with platforms that have not even initiated the process. Let’s wait until tomorrow.”

Earlier, on the proposal of the Ministry of Communications, the Cabinet meeting on Bhadra 9 gave a seven-day deadline for social media platforms to be listed. Following that decision, the ministry issued a notice on August 25, setting the current deadline for unregistered platforms.

The government has also decided to instruct the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to gradually deactivate social media platforms in Nepal that fail to get listed or make contact within the specified timeframe.

So far, only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, BitTalk, and Poppo Live have been listed. After the ban on Telegram, the platform has applied for registration with the ministry, which is currently under review.
