VPN usage surges, bandwidth overload may disrupt service from evening

Kathmandu: Internet service providers have warned that internet traffic may be disrupted from Monday evening due to a surge in VPN usage.

Following the government’s ban on social media, the number of VPN users has spiked so sharply that the imported internet bandwidth can no longer handle it.

Sudhir Parajuli, president of the Internet Service Providers Association Nepal, said VPN traffic has exceeded bandwidth capacity by 40 percent. “We are experiencing 40 percent more traffic than the capacity of our system. We are forced to keep refreshing, and while it may be manageable until evening, it will not be possible after that. Nepali sites are already failing to load in the evenings,” Parajuli told TechPana.

According to him, internet service providers have already verbally informed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority about the issue. “We have briefed the concerned bodies verbally. We are not in a position to provide it in writing right now,” Parajuli added.
