Oli Says Social Media Registration Failed Due to Anarchic Resistance

Kathmandu: UML Chairman and outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has once again defended his government’s attempt to regulate social media. Speaking at a program organized by CPN-UML Bhaktapur in Gundu on Thursday, Oli said the effort to bring social media platforms under registration was justified.

“We did not shut down social media. My country cannot be disrespected,” Oli said. “It is unacceptable for anyone to earn money here, evade taxes, and take it elsewhere. That will not be allowed again.”

He argued that social media companies operating in Nepal should be registered and made to pay taxes. “Those who sell vegetables and tomatoes pay taxes. But we could not tolerate social media companies earning billions without paying taxes,” he said. “Such anarchic elements resisted the registration process. They rejected our constitution and country, creating an environment of obstruction.”

However, during Oli’s tenure, the government’s push for mandatory registration of social media platforms was primarily aimed at content moderation, not tax collection. The goal was to regulate and remove objectionable content posted on social media.

Several international platforms, including Meta, Google, and LinkedIn, are already registered under the Department of Inland Revenue and pay a digital service tax in Nepal.
