Government Orders Shutdown of 26 Social Media Apps, Including Facebook, YouTube, and Hamro Patro

Kathmandu: The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has directed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to shut down 26 unlisted social media platforms.

On Thursday afternoon, the ministry sent a letter to the authority, instructing it to block platforms that failed to apply for listing within the deadline.

The decision follows a meeting led by Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung earlier that day, which resolved to ban unlisted social media networks in Nepal.

Earlier, the Cabinet meeting on August 25 had given a seven-day deadline for platforms to register with the ministry. The ministry then issued a public notice on August 28, extending the deadline by another seven days.

According to ministry spokesperson Gajendra Kumar Thakur, only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, BitTalk, and Poppo Live have been listed so far. Telegram and Global Diary are in the process of being listed.
