YouTuber Behind Viral ‘80 Kg Gold’ Claim in Jhapa Deletes Protest Videos

Kathmandu: YouTuber Sujan Dhakal has deleted all his videos related to the Gen-Z protests from Facebook. Dhakal had posted multiple videos on his social media accounts about the protests of 8 and 9 September.

During the protests on 9 September, he uploaded a video claiming that two sacks of gold were discovered at the house of a mayor in Jhapa. In the video, he said: “This is really breaking news! Two more sacks of gold have been found in the house of the mayor of Kankaimai in Jhapa, which is KP Sharma Oli’s constituency.”

He went on to insist: “Yes, all this black money should be exposed now. The time has come to uncover it. Earlier, 80 kg of gold was found, and now two sacks of gold have been found in the house of the same mayor.”

Dhakal, who is also a local resident of Jhapa, was present in the district during the protest. However, he made the video without presenting any evidence. The video was shared on his Facebook page with over 900,000 followers and on TikTok, where he has more than 200,000 followers.

Although all protest-related videos have been removed from his Facebook, some remain on his TikTok. However, the controversial video alleging gold was found in the mayor’s house has also been taken down from TikTok.

Dhakal was seen alongside another YouTuber, Bhagya Neupane, during the protest. Both had repeatedly posted videos inciting crowds but began deleting them once the situation normalized. Earlier, Neupane had uploaded a video demanding the release of Rastriya Swatantra Party President Ravi Lamichhane from Nakkhu Prison and calling for him to be made Prime Minister. That video, too, has now been deleted.
