Eight Lakh Smartphones Worth Rs 13.62 Billion Imported Into Nepal in Three Months

Kathmandu: Nepal imported eight lakh smartphones worth Rs 13.62 billion in the first three months of the current fiscal year 2082/83, according to data from the Department of Customs.

From this import, the government collected Rs 2.54 billion in customs revenue. The highest number of smartphones were imported in Bhadau, coinciding with the Dashain-Tihar festival season, which is considered a peak period for smartphone sales

In Shrawan, 198,333 smartphones worth Rs 3.41 billion were imported. The number rose to 310,360 units worth Rs 5.45 billion in Bhadau, targeting the festive demand. In Asoj, 296,167 smartphones worth Rs 4.75 billion entered the country. The government collected the highest revenue from imports in Bhadau.

Customs revenue stood at Rs 637.9 million in Shrawan, Rs 1 billion in Bhadra, and Rs 886.3 million in Asoj.

During the same period last fiscal year (Shrawan, Bhadra, and Asoj), Nepal imported 655,631 smartphones worth Rs 9.83 billion, from which the government collected Rs 1.83 billion in customs revenue.

In the previous year, 225,163 smartphones worth Rs 3.46 billion were imported in Shrawan, 229,795 units worth Rs 3.24 billion in Bhadra, and 267,673 units worth Rs 3.12 billion in Asoj. The government had collected Rs 646.2 million, Rs 604.5 million, and Rs 582.6 million in customs revenue, respectively.

The majority of smartphones imported into Nepal come from China and India.
