Kathmandu: Free Wi-Fi has been installed in 19 public locations across Kathmandu. This follows the first decision made by Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel after taking office on September 22, to provide free internet access in all public areas of the Kathmandu Valley within two months.
According to the Ministry of Communications, free Wi-Fi has now been connected to several major sites, including hospitals, the Pashupatinath Temple area, Tribhuvan International Airport, and other important public service zones.
Existing Wi-Fi facilities have been renovated and upgraded to improve quality and capacity, while eight new locations have been added, with three more currently under construction.
New free Wi-Fi networks are being set up at Kathmandu’s New Bus Park, Bhaktapur Hospital, Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, Kirtipur Hospital, and Tribhuvan International Airport. Work is also underway to expand coverage at the Thulobharyang and Ekantakuna Transport Offices and to install new systems at the Radhe Radhe Transport Office in Bhaktapur.
The ministry has partnered with Nepal Telecom, Worldlink, and Vianet to provide the service. These companies have signed agreements with the concerned authorities to ensure the continuity and sustainability of free Wi-Fi.
Following Minister Kharel’s directive, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) coordinated with internet service providers to expand access.
According to the NTA, bandwidth in major hospitals, including Bir Hospital, Paropkar Maternity and Gynecology Hospital, TU Teaching Hospital (Maharajgunj), Teku Hospital, Kanti Children’s Hospital, Gangalal Heart Center, Civil Hospital, National Trauma Center, Patan Hospital, and the Pashupatinath Temple area, has been upgraded from 10 Mbps to 150 Mbps, with device-level capacity expanded from 100 MB to 500 MB.
Nepal Telecom has also prepared an action plan to expand free Wi-Fi service to 35 airports across the country, including Tribhuvan International Airport.
Additionally, six access points have been installed at Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital and five at Kirtipur Hospital.
The ministry said it is also working to expand free Wi-Fi access to 10 cities outside the Kathmandu Valley.
A monitoring team, led by Minister Kharel, is scheduled to visit the New Bus Park, TU Teaching Hospital, Pashupatinath area, and Tribhuvan International Airport from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday to oversee the service operation.
