Kathmandu: The work of linking the Election Commission and the National Identity Card system has begun to facilitate voter registration. According to sources in the Prime Minister's Office, the work of linking these two systems has begun since Monday.
The work is expected to go live by Tuesday evening and then the testing will begin, a source told TechPana. IT technicians from the Commission and the National Identity Card and Registration Department are working tirelessly for this.
It is said that the date for opening online voter registration will be decided only after the testing is successful. Currently, the Election Commission has made arrangements to submit pre-enrollment applications online, where one has to fill in details such as name, address, date of birth, family details, and citizenship information, make an appointment, and go to a specific place in the district to provide biometrics.
After the Commission and the National Identity Card systems are linked, biometrics and photos can be verified by entering the national identity card number on the Commission's pre-registration site. After that, voter registration will be completed after selecting one of the polling stations in the place where one has a permanent address.
The date of the upcoming House of Representatives election has been set for March 5. New voters who will vote in the election will have to register their names in the voter list by November 16.
As the last date for voter list registration is approaching, the pressure on the Election Commission's system and biometric collection points has increased. Due to this, voter registration has become inconvenient, so Prime Minister Sushila Karki has taken the initiative.
On Karki's order, the Prime Minister's Office has also written to the Election Commission for facilitation. In it, the office has requested the Commission to initiate the necessary legal and technical procedures to link the Commission and the National Identity Card system, to facilitate voter list registration by adding additional shifts if there is a shortage of staff, and to extend the voter list registration time until November 16, if necessary.
It is understood that the option of additional shifts was suggested because the Commission's old technology was not supporting the work of speeding up the voter registration process by adding computers and other equipment.
