Exclusive Rights of NPL Live Broadcast Taken From Star Sports, Now a Nepali Channel Will Air It Too

Kathmandu: The second season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) will also be broadcast live on a Nepali television channel. Along with Star Sports, another Nepali TV channel will now air NPL Season 2.
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has amended the contract it issued just four days before the start of the tournament and decided to allow a Nepali channel to broadcast the matches alongside Star Sports. On November 4, CAN had issued a tender for selling the linear television broadcasting rights of the Nepal Premier League within Nepal.
After Nepali TV channel operators objected to the tender designed to favor only foreign broadcasters, CAN revised the contract shortly before the tournament. According to CAN, Star Sports will continue to broadcast the Nepal Premier League this season, as it did last season. However, on Thursday, CAN amended the contract and issued a notice allowing Nepali channels to take part as well.
Earlier, the contract required interested broadcasters to have held the broadcasting rights of at least one international sports event in Nepal within the last five years. CAN has now amended this requirement, allowing broadcasters who have handled the rights of any domestic, regional or international sports event in the last five years to participate.
Star Sports had already secured exclusive rights for NPL Season 2. That meant it alone could broadcast live matches throughout the tournament. Highlights and other related content could also only be aired by Star Sports with CAN’s approval.
But CAN has amended this as well, shifting to a “non-exclusive” rights model for linear television. This means a Nepali channel can now broadcast all matches, highlights and other NPL content within Nepal.
CAN has set the minimum bid price for the contract at Rs 10 million. In this process, at least two companies may submit a joint venture proposal. However, CAN has added a condition through the amendment that the Nepal Premier League must be broadcast on only one Nepali channel.
Interested organizations can purchase the tender documents until 3 pm on Friday. Proposals must be submitted by 12 noon on Saturday, and CAN plans to open the proposals at 1 pm the same day.
On November 4, CAN also opened a tender for selling exclusive OTT broadcasting rights for all countries except India. CAN has not yet officially announced the results.
