Action Taken Against 48 YouTube and Facebook Pages for Spreading Confusion and Incitement, Details of 13 Sent to Cyber Bureau

Kathmandu: Press Council Nepal has taken action against 48 social media platforms (YouTube channels and Facebook pages) for disseminating content that violates the journalistic code of conduct. In a press release issued on Wednesday, the council said these platforms were brought under action for publishing content that spreads violence, fear and rumors in society.

The council said that during its special monitoring, it found obscene, provocative, false and baseless content that disturbs social harmony being circulated through YouTube and Facebook.

The 48 social media platforms have been classified into three groups. The council has warned 24 YouTube and Facebook pages that continue to publish false, misleading and abusive content despite being affiliated with the media. These platforms have been instructed not to disseminate such content in the future. In this group, ‘Avenue News’ has been asked to submit a response, while platforms such as ‘About Nepal’, ‘Indreni Times’ and ‘Madhesh Khabar’ have been warned.

Similarly, 10 social media platforms that appear to operate as media but are not registered or documented have been instructed to immediately remove such content and register as per the rules. They have also been told to remain within the code of conduct. These include ‘Dharan Online News’, ‘Good News Nepal’, ‘Info Khabar News’, ‘Nepal Sandesh’ and others.

Letters have also been sent to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for further investigation and action against 13 platforms that have not disclosed their contact details and are spreading content of a serious nature. Those handed over to the police include pages and channels such as ‘Mero Nepal’, ‘K6 Nepal News’, ‘Muglani Khabar HD’, ‘Nagirik Awaz’, ‘Nepaltantra’ and others.

The Press Council has appealed to media outlets and the public not to publish content that incites, spreads hatred or fuels malice in society, as such content goes against journalistic values.
