Kathmandu: It has been revealed that a pair who attempted spot-fixing Janakpur Bolts players during the second season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) were caught due to the honesty and readiness of the players. The case came to light after Indian citizen Dilpreet Singh and Nepali national Rebika Singh Thakuri, who had come to Nepal to earn money through betting, proposed match fixing to the players.
According to the charge sheet filed by the District Attorney’s Office at the Kathmandu District Court on 7 December, the case began on 16 November. A user named ‘R-U-B-B-y T-H-A-K-U-R’ sent a message to the player from an Instagram account named ‘ruby-2075’. The message read, “We sponsor the player. Can I get your number? Or can you meet me when you are free? We will discuss some things that will be beneficial for both of us.”
In response, the player asked what kind of sponsorship it was. The individual who approached the player on the pretext of sponsorship invited him to meet at the Dusit Princess Hotel in Lazimpat, where the player was staying.
Dilpreet Singh arrived at the hotel lobby along with Rebika Singh Thakuri. Although they initially said they wanted to sponsor the player, they later revealed their real intention during the conversation. Dilpreet Singh played the main role in the plan, while Rebika acted as an assistant.
Dilpreet told the player that he had played cricket in India and explained how to make symbolic gestures during the match and how to get run out deliberately. They initially offered four to five lakh rupees. Later, they increased the amount to between one crore and five crore rupees to lure the player.
According to the player’s statement, they discussed making a signal in the middle of an over and fixing a run-out. However, the Janakpur Bolts batsman flatly refused, saying that the act was illegal and against the spirit of the game. He said he did not take any financial benefit and immediately informed the police after hearing the offer. Based on the Instagram and WhatsApp chats provided by the player and details of the incident, the police initiated an investigation.
The investigation found that Singh and Thakuri, who were later arrested, were using betting platforms such as Stake.com, Betbook.com, and King, which are banned in Nepal. They attempted to influence NPL players to earn money through illegal betting. Acting on the player’s information, police arrested them from the Lazimpat area on 17 November.
The Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu, filed a case against them in the Kathmandu District Court last Sunday. They have been charged under Sub-section (6) of Section 125 of the Criminal Code 2074 BS for the offense of gambling or facilitating gambling.
