Kathmandu. Kathmandu University and Nepal Community University have signed a partnership agreement to run a master’s program titled Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MSIE). The program has been introduced with the aim of addressing Nepal’s current needs and the aspirations of young people, while rethinking conventional approaches to higher education.
The core feature of the program is the concept of Community-as-Curriculum. Under this model, students will not study in traditional classrooms. Instead, they will learn by visiting, living in, and studying across all three geographical regions of Nepal.
Students will spend 10 weeks in each region, equivalent to one trimester per region. During this period, they will engage directly with local communities, social enterprises, and grassroots initiatives to understand Nepal’s socio-economic realities.
Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony, Kathmandu University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle said educational travel should help students understand the country’s geographical and social realities.
Similarly, KU School of Arts Dean Dr. Uddhav Pyakurel said that while other programs also include fieldwork, this program is distinct in its structure. He noted that spending three trimesters in the Himalayas, hills, and the Terai would provide students with a deeper understanding of social realities.
According to Narottam Aryal, President of Nepal Community University, the MSIE is Nepal’s first interdisciplinary postgraduate program integrating social sciences, technology, and entrepreneurship. He said the program will help students develop self-awareness, analyze socio-political and economic dynamics, and build entrepreneurial thinking.
In the final semester, students will be able to choose from four tracks: academic research, an entrepreneurship track to start their own venture, a consultancy track focused on industry engagement, or a global track that allows participation as an exchange student with an international organization.
Aryal added that non-resident Nepalis (NRNs), local industrialists, and community members will be involved as mentors and experts. The program is scheduled to begin in October 2026 and is open to applications from change-makers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and graduates from diverse academic backgrounds.
