Kathmandu. Nepal Communiversity, in collaboration with Kathmandu University, has launched a new postgraduate program, Master’s in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MSIE), aimed at promoting community-based and experiential learning in Nepal’s higher education sector. The program, announced in Kathmandu, will begin this October with the participation of 30 students from diverse academic backgrounds.
The MSIE program has been designed around the concepts of “community-as-curriculum” and experiential learning, allowing students to gain practical knowledge through direct engagement with communities across different geographical regions of Nepal.
Under the curriculum, studies will be conducted in three phases representing the Himalayas, hills, and Terai regions. Classes and field-based learning activities will take place in Mustang, Chitlang, and Janakpur respectively, while the final Capstone semester will be completed in Kathmandu.
Students will work closely with local communities on community-based projects integrating entrepreneurship, social sciences, technology, and social welfare through an interdisciplinary approach.
Speaking at the launch event, Narottam Aryal, Chairman of Nepal Communiversity said the institution aims to develop education that is “locally rooted but globally competent.” He added that the program seeks to produce individuals with self-awareness, social understanding, practical skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
Similarly, Prof. Dr. Uddhab Pyakurel, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Kathmandu University expressed confidence that the program would help students identify Nepal’s potential and create meaningful solutions to real-world problems.
Chief speaker of the program, Dr. Uttam Babu Shrestha said that at a time when society is rapidly moving toward technology, algorithms, and urbanization, it is important for education to remain connected to communities, nature, and villages. He also urged students to remain ethically responsible while pursuing entrepreneurship and innovation.
Nepal Communiversity has opened applications for students from humanities, science, business, and technology backgrounds. Further details regarding the MSIE program are available on the institution’s official website.
