Kathmandu: The Election Commission has begun monitoring social media pages that political parties and leaders have promoted by paying for boosted content. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari said the Commission is closely tracking paid digital campaigns run by parties and candidates.
Recalling that the Commission has fixed spending limits for election campaigns, Bhandari warned that early expenditure on social media could affect parties’ ability to spend during the official election period. “We are already assessing how much parties and candidates are allowed to spend and how much they have spent so far. If money is spent on social media now, it may limit campaign spending during the election,” he said.
The Commission has urged parties and leaders to remain mindful of expenditure ceilings while using social media platforms. “We are working to conduct a cost-effective election. The Commission will not tolerate excessive or unnecessary spending by parties and candidates,” Bhandari added.
