Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel inaugurated Ncell’s Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) Capacity Enhancement Project at Ncell’s Data Center in Pokhara on Sunday. He formally inaugurated the project by switching on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) system, which has been expanded to provide VoLTE and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services through state-of-the-art servers.
With this expansion, Ncell will now be able to provide VoLTE services to five million active customers through this data center. As VoLTE is a new technology in the field of telecommunications services, it provides high-quality High Definition (HD) and fast-connecting voice call services. Similarly, Ncell’s VoLTE technology allows users to make and receive phone calls from their own Ncell number using any Wi-Fi network.
Through this service, users can make HD voice calls and send SMS. Especially in basements, tall buildings, or remote places where mobile signals are weak but stable Wi-Fi is available, users can remain connected through VoWiFi.
While inspecting, observing, and meeting with various offices, Minister Kharel visited the data center, which is operated as Ncell’s Disaster Recovery Center in Pokhara. Ncell Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer Dilliram Shrestha and Corporate Communication and Sustainability Director Visakhalakshmi Khadka welcomed Minister Kharel.
After the observation tour, Minister Kharel said, “Ncell’s goal of building a Digital Nepal is being continuously supported by such infrastructure, and Ncell’s Pokhara Data Center is one of the major infrastructures driving digitalization.”
He also praised the operation and management of the data center. Ncell Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer Shrestha said that the data center was established and brought into operation in 2012 and has since remained a major infrastructure in Nepal’s telecommunications and information technology sector.
“After the enhancement of VoLTE capacity, the company can now provide this modern service to more customers,” he said. Shrestha and other responsible branch officials of Ncell informed Minister Kharel about the work, capacity, technical aspects, and the role of the data center in the telecommunications and information technology sector.
