KATHMANDU: TikTok has removed nearly 274,000 videos containing misinformation in Nepal over the past two years, according to a transparency report released by the short-video platform.
The company stated that 274,333 videos were removed in Nepal between July 2023 and September 2025, spanning a total of nine enforcement quarters, for violating its misinformation policies as part of broader enforcement of its community guidelines.
Between July and September 2023, TikTok removed 1.27 million videos in Nepal, of which 33,382, or 2.6%, were classified as misinformation. In the final quarter of 2023, 1.22 million videos were removed, including 25,997, or 2.1%, for misleading content, the report said.
TikTok provided no removal data for January to June 2024, the period when the platform was banned in Nepal. Although some users continued posting content using alternative methods during this January–June 2024 ban, the company did not disclose enforcement figures for those six months.
After the ban was lifted, TikTok removed 975,677 videos between July and September 2024, including 16,547 identified as misinformation. In the final quarter of 2024, 1.48 million videos were removed, of which 28,799 were categorized as misleading.
Enforcement increased in 2025, with 55,959 misinformation videos removed between January and March, followed by a peak of 61,611 between April and June, when total removals exceeded 2.4 million, according to the report. From July to September 2025, TikTok removed 2.83 million videos, including 52,037 for misinformation.
Overall, TikTok said more than 12.1 million videos in Nepal were subject to enforcement action during the two-year period, with misinformation accounting for nearly 275,000 removals.
TechPana's FactCheck said misinformation in the country most commonly involves politics, religion, social issues, health, natural disasters, and financial fraud. TechPana has operated a fact-checking unit for the past 11 months to counter false information on social media platforms.
