Kathmandu. As the news about actor Sagar Lamsal ‘Bale’ being accused of rape and his arrest continues to circulate, an unrelated young woman has become a victim of cyberbullying on social media due to having the same name. After a young woman named ‘Sangam Bista’ living in the United States accused actor Lamsal of rape, another ‘Sangam Bista’ living in Finland started receiving a flood of abuse on social media platforms like TikTok.
Sangam Bista, who is in Finland, has raised objection to the harassment she has been facing by releasing a video. She clarified that she has not been aware of the recent development in Nepal and, being occupied with work, does not even have time to check her news feed regularly. After receiving excessive abuse and negative comments on TikTok, she gave an explanation, saying, “Coincidentally, my name and the name of the girl making the allegations are the same. But we are different individuals. I urge everyone to check the profile and recognize the person before abusing someone just by looking at the name, and to stop the bullying against me.”
According to the allegations, a young Nepali woman living in the United States had accused actor Sagar Lamsal ‘Bale’ on Facebook of raping her in his apartment nearly a year ago when she was mentally stressed. Based on the allegation and the ensuing public discussion, the police took Lamsal into custody from Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, on Saturday morning. As soon as this incident became public, both supporting and opposing the claims started on social media.
While both the alleged victim and the accused were being subjected to offensive comments on social media, even unrelated young women have become targets just because their names match. Sangam, who is in Finland, was forced to turn off the comments section on her TikTok after receiving numerous abusive and negative comments.
