Kathmandu. The government has proposed a plan to monitor forest fires in real time using drone and satellite technology. The proposal is included in the draft ‘National Commitment,’ prepared by incorporating the manifestos of six major political parties, aimed at overall national development and administrative reforms.
According to the draft, a ‘High Alert Center for Forest Fires’ will be established to protect the community and national forests. It states that modern technology and digital systems will be adopted in place of traditional methods for sustainable forest management.
To address environmental challenges in the mid-hills and Chure regions, the government plans to adopt scientific approaches, including the construction of water collection ponds in suitable areas and improved management of rainfall and river systems to reduce the recurring risks of floods and droughts.
Additionally, the draft proposes stricter measures to control the unregulated extraction of stones, gravel, and sand from the Chure region. A scientific system for extraction and export will be introduced, and the Integrated Chure Conservation Authority will be strengthened with additional powers and coordinated responsibilities across federal, provincial, and local levels.
The government has stated that the plan, listed as item 3 in its 100-point reform agenda, will be incorporated into the budget and policies for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 and implemented accordingly. Public feedback on the draft can be submitted until April 23.
