Kathmandu. Police have arrested four members of a gang involved in online fraud by impersonating officials from Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau.
The suspects were apprehended in Dharan on Sunday by the Central Cyber Bureau in coordination with the District Police Office, Dharan. They have been identified as Deepak Limbu (30) of Sangurigadhi Rural Municipality-3, Dhankuta; Saurabh Bhujel (21) of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-9, Sunsari; Sajal Rai (28) of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-13; and Srijan Thapa (24) of Inaruwa Municipality-6.
According to Cyber Bureau spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Giri, the accused were brought to Kathmandu the same night. The Kathmandu District Court has granted a four-day remand to facilitate further investigation under charges of electronic fraud.
Preliminary findings indicate that the group targeted individuals who had previously fallen victim to scams on Telegram. Posing as Cyber Bureau officials, the suspects allegedly used caller identification tools to display “Cyber Bureau” on the Truecaller app to gain victims’ trust
“They would threaten victims with legal action and demand money to ‘resolve’ the case,” Giri said.
Police launched an investigation after receiving complaints from victims, leading to the arrests through technical surveillance.
Authorities are now probing how the group obtained victims’ personal information and the total amount defrauded. Investigators are also examining whether the suspects were involved in other criminal activities.
