Kathmandu. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has begun a cable management drive along six major routes in Kathmandu Valley, aiming to improve urban aesthetics and enhance public safety. The Authority said the work, which includes removing unused cables and organizing existing telephone and internet lines, will be completed in phases within 15 days.
According to the NTA, unmanaged, damaged, and hanging telephone and internet cables on utility poles have not only tarnished the city's appearance but also posed risks to public safety and mobility. To address these concerns, the Authority has initiated a coordinated cable management operation.
Under this management work, disorganized and unused cables in areas where underground infrastructure developed by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is already available will be removed. Other active cables will be reorganized safely and systematically.
The first phase of the operation will cover six routes: Tripureshwor–Kalimati–Kalanki, Jadibuti–Pepsicola, Tripureshwor–Lazimpat, Samakhusi Town Planning (Gongabu), the Kirtipur area, and the Old Baneshwor–Gausala–Chabahil corridor.
The Authority has directed all telecommunications and internet service providers to participate in the work daily and properly manage their respective cable networks. It has also instructed providers to label their cables with identification tags that clearly indicate the owning organization.
The NTA warned that if a service provider's representative is absent during cable management work or if cables lack proper identification tags, any resulting damage, removal, or cutting of cables will be the sole responsibility of the concerned provider.
The Authority further stated that telecom operators and internet service providers must comply with established standards while expanding, maintaining, upgrading, or reorganizing their networks. It emphasized that all such activities must adhere to the “Directive for Laying and Maintaining Optical Fiber Networks” issued by the NTA.
