RSP to Use Electronic Voting Machines in First National Convention to Speed Up Election Process

Kathmandu. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) for its first national convention to speed up the election process and make it more technology-friendly, according to party General Secretary Kavindra Burlakoti.

Speaking at a secretariat meeting on Thursday, Burlakoti said the use of EVMs is expected to reduce the time required for voting and counting significantly. “Reports show that the voting and counting process, which usually takes two days, can be completed within 6 to 7 hours using electronic voting machines,” he said, adding that although the system may appear costly, it would be more efficient and economical in terms of overall convention management.

The first national convention of RSP is scheduled to be held in Chitwan from June 21 to 23. Burlakoti said party subcommittees have been instructed to complete all preparations by the evening of June 20.

He said the convention is estimated to cost around Rs 40 million, which will be raised through delegate registration fees and contributions from party members and supporters. Around 2,500 to 3,000 delegates from across the country are expected to participate.

Likewise, about 170 delegates from more than 38 countries will also take part in the convention, with some participants from abroad planning to attend in person in Chitwan.

He added that preparations are also underway to introduce an internet-based voting system for delegates unable to attend physically. However, he said the system has not yet been tested. “The technical team is working on it. We hope to test it soon so that delegates can participate in voting on the 22nd and 23rd June,” he said.
