Vibe Coding Is Transforming Software Development, but Cybersecurity Risks Are Growing

Nirajan Acharya

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way software is developed, making it faster and more accessible than ever before. In Nepal, developers are increasingly relying on AI-powered coding tools to build websites, mobile applications, and digital services. While the technology promises greater efficiency and lower development costs, cybersecurity experts warn that excessive reliance on AI-generated code or Vibe coding without proper review could expose organizations to serious security risks.

Vibe coding allows developers to generate software code by describing their requirements with prompts rather than writing every line manually. Although this significantly improves productivity, especially for experienced programmers, experts caution that AI-generated code should never be deployed without thorough testing, human review, and security assessment.

The adoption of AI-assisted development has accelerated in Nepal, particularly among small and medium-sized businesses, educational institutions, local governments, and private organizations with limited technical resources. In many cases, websites and digital platforms are being developed and launched within hours. However, concerns remain over whether these rapidly built systems meet basic cybersecurity standards.

From a cybersecurity standpoint, AI-generated code may contain vulnerabilities such as weak input validation, inadequate access controls, SQL injection flaws, and cross-site scripting (XSS) weaknesses. If left undetected, these vulnerabilities can expose sensitive user information, allow unauthorized system access, and increase the risk of cyberattacks.

Another growing concern is the false assumption that AI-generated code is inherently reliable. While AI can generate functional code, it cannot consistently guarantee that the code is secure or suitable for every context. Its output is based on patterns learned from existing data rather than expert security judgment.

As Nepal continues to expand its digital infrastructure, cybersecurity has become increasingly important. Government services, financial systems, educational records, and citizens' personal data are all becoming more dependent on digital platforms. Even minor security flaws can lead to data breaches, financial losses, and service disruptions.

Experts emphasize that AI should be viewed as a productivity tool rather than a replacement for secure software engineering practices. They recommend that every AI-generated application undergo human code review, regular security testing, compliance with international security standards, and evaluation by cybersecurity professionals before deployment.

The history of technology shows that every innovation brings both opportunities and risks. AI-assisted Vibe coding is no exception. While it has the potential to accelerate digital transformation, neglecting security in pursuit of speed could create significant cybersecurity challenges in the future.

For Nepal's digital future, the priority should remain clear: building secure systems is ultimately more important than building fast ones.
