Viral Video of RSP MP Ashika Tamang Planting Rice on Naubise Road Is Four Years Old

Kathmandu. A video circulating widely on social media showing Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) member Ashika Tamang planting rice in potholes on the Naubise Chowk road in Dhading is not recent, despite claims accompanying the posts.

The video, shared by several Facebook users and pages, shows Tamang planting rice in the middle of the damaged road alongside a group of young people while singing a monsoon-themed song that humorously highlights the poor condition of the Naubise road. The act was intended as a symbolic protest against years of road neglect.

One Facebook page, "Seven Star 4K," posted the video with the caption suggesting it was filmed on June 29 this year, prompting widespread reactions online.

Many social media users criticized Tamang, arguing that as a sitting member of parliament she should focus on improving the road rather than staging a protest. Some questioned why an elected representative associated with the ruling coalition would resort to such demonstrations instead of initiating road construction.

One user, Laxman Kunwar, commented that there was no need for "acting" while being part of the government. Another user, Nar Bahadur Shrestha, wrote that elected representatives should prioritize repairing roads rather than protesting, suggesting Tamang should either ensure the road is upgraded or resign from her parliamentary position.

The Reality

Contrary to claims circulating online, the video was not filmed recently.

The footage was originally posted by Tamang on her official Facebook page on June 29, 2022 to mark National Paddy Day. At the time, she was not a member of parliament but was known as a social activist.

The symbolic protest drew significant public attention, with the video accumulating more than 3.7 million views.

Following the protest, local authorities began repairing the damaged section of the road. Later that same day, Tamang shared another post stating that the potholes at Naubise Chowk were being filled and uploaded a video showing construction equipment carrying out the repair work.

The video now being circulated as recent was therefore recorded before Tamang entered Parliament, making claims that it shows her protesting while serving as an MP misleading.
