NC Lawmaker Sita Thapaliya Says Social Media Trolling Drove Her to Attempt Su*cide Twice

Kathmandu. Nepali Congress lawmaker Sita Thapaliya has revealed that intense trolling on social media left her mentally distressed and led her to attempt suicide twice.

Speaking during a meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Thapaliya said she and another lawmaker faced widespread online abuse after both raised the same issue in Parliament a few days ago.

She said they had drawn the government's attention to the deaths of three young people who attempted self-immolation within 24 hours, arguing that the incidents reflected the government's failure to respond to public grievances.

"Our way was different because the government wasn't listening. As long as the government does not listen, we will continue to raise the issue in that manner. It is not just two people—hundreds can speak out on the same issue," she said.

Thapaliya said the backlash that followed on social media had a severe impact on her mental health.

"I could not cope with the trolling and became mentally disturbed. During that period, I even attempted suicide twice," she told Parliament.

Calling for greater reflection on the impact of online behavior, Thapaliya urged lawmakers and the public to seriously examine how social media is being used and its consequences for people's mental well-being.

"Let us reflect on ourselves and evaluate what kind of social media environment we have created and what we are making of it," she said.
