Kathmandu: Over 1,300 government websites are frozen—can’t be updated-- after failing to migrate to the new Government Integrated Website Management System (GIWMS) within the set deadline. After the mid-Ashar deadline, websites on the old system were locked for editing. As of Thursday, updates and new content are no longer possible.
Previously, websites hosted on the old C-Panel system under the former Integrated Data Management Office (IDMC) were instructed to move to the new GIWMS, operated by the Department of Information Technology. However, many agencies failed to complete the transition in time and are now technically frozen.
According to Ramesh Sharma Paudyal, Director General of the department, users can still view the old websites, but concerned agencies cannot modify any content. “It is no longer possible to log in to the old system,” Paudyal told Techpana. “To make any changes, agencies must now migrate to the new system.” He added that the department continues to assist migration efforts.
A secretary-level meeting held on 7 Kartik, led by the Chief Secretary, had made GIWMS mandatory for all government bodies. Following that decision, the department issued repeated notices urging agencies to migrate by mid-Ashar.
The IDMC had managed more than 2,200 government websites. So far, only 380 agencies have completed migration and launched their websites under GIWMS, according to Paudyal. Another 870 agencies have received login credentials but haven’t finished moving their data.
After the department’s final notice on 11 Ashar, 70 more agencies made contact. Of them, 40 are already live on the new system, while 30 are in the process of migrating. Officials warn that delays in implementing GIWMS could affect the flow of public information from government sources.
