Thulung Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality's Mistake: Personal Data of Hundreds of Citizens Exposed on Social Media

Kathmandu: Thulung Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu has publicly disclosed the personal details of hundreds of service recipients, including citizenship numbers, on social media. The incident has raised serious concerns about individual privacy and data security after the information was shared on Facebook in an attempt to inform citizens about the distribution of national identity cards.

The information was posted through the official page of Rural Municipality Chairman Asim Rai’s secretariat. While announcing that national identity cards would be distributed at a camp in Kathmandu on July 20, 21, and 22, he also uploaded a list of individuals scheduled to receive their identity cards.

The list, spread across 48 pages of images, includes sensitive personal information such as full names, citizenship numbers, ward numbers, and gender details of hundreds of individuals.

According to cybersecurity experts, publicly releasing such personal data significantly increases the risk of identity theft and other criminal activities.

After TechPana brought the matter to Chairman Rai’s attention, he acknowledged the mistake. “I have now realized the potential misuse of service recipients’ data. There is a risk. I will remove it immediately,” he said.
