Fonepay connects with Alipay, enabling payments in Nepal from 17 international wallets
Kathmandu: Payment system operator Fonepay has formally partnered with China’s global payment service provider Alipay Plus. The two networks were officially connected during an event held in the capital on Thursday.
With this collaboration, tourists can now make payments in Nepal using PhonePay QR codes through 17 international wallets linked to Alipay’s network. These include wallets such as Touch ’n Go, GCash, Alipay, Toss Pay, and TrueMoney.
Edward Yue, Managing Director for Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia, and New Zealand at Ant Group, Alipay’s parent company, said the service will allow tourists worldwide to make QR payments in Nepal with ease.
The facility is expected to be particularly beneficial for tourists from China, Thailand, South Korea, Germany, and other countries. Alipay Plus currently connects 36 international payment apps, over 1.7 billion consumer accounts, and more than 100 million merchants across 70 markets.
Fonepay CEO Diwash Kumar said that with this integration, over 1.7 million merchants on the PhonePay network can now receive payments directly from international wallets. “This will make the experience of tourists visiting Nepal more convenient and help connect Nepali businesses with global customers,” he said, adding that the partnership will expand digital payment adoption in Nepal and positively impact the tourism sector.
