How Long Will It Take for Khalti and eSewa to Enable Wallet-to-Wallet Transfers?

Kathmandu: Work is underway to establish interoperability between Nepal’s two largest digital wallets. According to a report published by Nepal Rastra Bank on Sunday, eSewa and Khalti by IME have started preparations to enable wallet-to-wallet transfers and payments through the switch of FonePay Payment Service Limited.

A Khalti official said the technical integration between the two wallets has been mostly completed, with FonePay serving as the intermediary. However, the feature has yet to go live. “This is more of a post-merger issue than a technical one,” the official said. “There’s still confusion about how the merged wallet system will function once it goes live.”

Efforts are now focused on ensuring interoperability between eSewa and the newly merged Khalti wallet. “Once interoperability is established, users of Khalti and eSewa will be able to send money between wallets and scan each other’s QR codes. The transaction fees will be determined after the live operation begins,” said the Khalti official.

According to eSewa management, there are no technical barriers to interoperability. “The systems of FonePay and eSewa are already interoperable. We’ve been using them through various banks and financial institutions,” said an eSewa official. “The real question is not technical compatibility but whether both businesses will agree to collaborate and how it will affect future operations.”

The official added that although discussions have taken place at several stages, interoperability has not yet reached the rollout phase. “We see this as a business opportunity. After the Khalti–IME Pay merger, the dynamics have changed. For example, why can’t users pay through eSewa at an IME-operated cable car?” he asked. “Both parties must support and coexist with each other. Integration will happen only if it benefits both sides. So, this is a business issue, not a technical one.”

Khalti has already joined the FonePay network under F1Soft Group, which allows users to make payments easily by scanning FonePay QR codes through the Khalti app.
