Five Youth Congress Leaders Arrested During Social Media Ban Protest

Kathmandu: Police have arrested five members of Youth Congress Nepal while they were protesting against the government’s social media ban in Naya Baneshwor. The arrests took place around 4 pm on Saturday in front of the Federal Parliament building.

Those detained are Youth Congress Nepal General Secretary Prabhat Kumar Thakur, Treasurer Biraj Aryal, Central Committee members Sujan Raj Giri and Dhiraj Sanjel, and member Ashish Sharma.

The organization has strongly objected to the arrests. In a statement, Youth Congress Nepal said that its movement was a completely peaceful and democratic protest in defense of constitutional rights, and stressed that any attempt to suppress voices raised in favor of freedom of expression is unacceptable. It has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested and warned against future attempts to suppress peaceful protests.

During the demonstration, members wore masks and black tape with cross marks. They also carried pamphlets with slogans such as “If you can’t write status, mute the minister’s speech too,” “Not a ban, regulate through law,” and “Slogan of digitization in speeches, what’s the point of shutting down social media?”
